Medication affects your pain at completely different sources. For example;
NSAIDS (ie Ibuprofen) affects the site of tissue damage
Analgesics (ie Paracetamol) affects the nerves to that area
Opiates (ie Codeine) affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
All have different risks and uses and all have their limitations.
The most common limitation is when pain lasts for longer than 3 months. Pain then becomes chronic, reducing the effectiveness of NSAIDs and analgesics. Many people then take opiates which can only have a short prescription.
The answer? I explain in this video
