Anger protects you from an external threat; pain protects you from an internal threat. However sometimes the relationship between our emotions and our physical state is blurred.

A man who used to walk with his wife, develops agonising hip pain when he is told she is terminally ill; a footballer who suffers a slight ankle sprain is in agony when she thinks it may end her career.

Amazingly, when the patient understands the link between their emotions and their pain they can start to heal. Sigmund Freud once said “if the conscious mind can shine light onto the unconscious lesion, the mind can heal itself”.

In this podcast, myself and Pippa explain how we help patients to take back control over their mental health and their pain
