There are often two camps with this question. One is “I can’t help how I feel”. Often we feel that our emotions control us and this may be the case for certain situations.
However, we have another more stoic camp. “I can’t control the situation but I can control my attitude (and by proxy our emotions)”.
The more we can put ourselves in the latter camp, the better. We can be the architects of our experience rather than be at the mercy of it. However this approach takes practice. CBT and Stoic philosophy often work within the gap between the event and the person. This gap is taken up by the response. If we can influence our response to a stressor, we can influence how it makes us feel.
What camp do you often find yourself in? Do you find yourself in control or controlled by your emotions?
