You think you have nerve pain? A lot of people do when they have a sharp or shooting pain

Here are some reassuring truths:

Nerve pain improves with treatment
Often a sharp, shooting pain isn’t actually nerve pain

Bones, joints, cartilage, muscles can all give the sensation of a sharp, shooting pain when they’re irritated. Nerve pain is often associated with the following symptoms

pins and needles or numbness
weakness of a muscle group
pain radiating over a large area

If you’re in pain, you should book in right away for an assessment and treatment. The longer pain continues, the harder it can be to shift it. But hopefully you should now have some ideas as to whether your pain is nerve related or not.

We want

effective treatment for pain relief
advice that empowers you over your pain
a plan to strengthen your spine for long term improvements in pain reduction, confidence and tolerance to movement

Ricky's Sciatica

And this is true for nerve pain in the arm, back, neck and leg. Sciatica, is an example of nerve pain in the leg. Have a look at Ricky’s story. He had unbearable Sciatica before coming to see us

What causes nerve pain?

This is where it gets interesting for us because we have to diagnose as to where your pain is coming from. Think of a nerve like a copper wire in a rubber sheath.

For the copper wire to malfunction, it could be:

bent out of shape (trapped)
the electricity from the wire could be slightly disrupted without damage (nerve irritation – pins and needles)
the copper could be naked and discharge (neuropraxia i.e. light damage – numbness, weakness)
the copper could be dissected completely (axonotmesis – paralysis, complete numbness)

This is a very basic overview of what we see at the clinic. Nerve pain or neurological symptoms can have many causes ranging from the nerve being irritated or trapped to it being effected by nutritional or immunological problems. This is why we take a thorough case history to ensure that you’re being provided with the right management for your pain.

Over 95% of cases at the clinic, we treat with great effectiveness. We’re rated 5 stars on google and Facebook. But sometimes we need to refer you to your doctor. But don’t worry, we’ll send you with a full report of our findings to fast track your progress so you can receive the right investigation for you.

How long does nerve pain take to recover?

This is something that we can discuss when we see you. Online or face to face we can assess your injury to make sure you receive the most accurate diagnosis possible.

But nerve pain in general can take anywhere from minutes to days to weeks to fully recover. This is why we need to see you. We can then explain how long your pain will most likely take to recover

But we are very accurate at predicting how long your pain will take to recover with treatment. So book an appointment where we can explain, online or face to face the likely outcome with treatment

Pete's trapped nerve

After taking a nasty hit to the head whilst boxing, Pete lost complete use of his arm and hand. He was in debilitating pain. He couldn’t sleep or train. After 2 treatments he was more or less pain free

How does Revitalize diagnose nerve pain?

Taking a thorough case history is essential here. We’ll ask you about when it started; how it feels; what makes it worse; what reduces the pain etc. It provides us with around 80% of what we need to know for your diagnosis and it tells us where to look next.
Next we use special tests. We can replicate these online and face to face. By asking you to move into certain position, we can stretch, compress or decompress the nerve and see if this worsens / improves your symptoms (you will only experience minor discomfort whilst doing these tests).
Then we can test the function of what the nerve supplies. For example, if it’s your sciatic nerve, because the sciatic nerve provides nerve flow to the back of the leg, we can test the back of the leg to see if its function is compromised.
By running through these tests (they only take 5 minutes) we can gain an accurate idea as to how bad the injury is AND what we need to do to help you

How does Revitalize treat nerve pain?

After we have an accurate diagnosis, we prioritise two things
Firstly, we must give the nerve the best chance to recover
This means regular decompression, treatment and self treatment plans, nutritional and lifestyle advice.
All details of self treatment and self management will be sent to you in a video guided rehab plan via email. But generally, if you see us at the clinic, we will loosen and desensitise the effected areas. If online, we’ll teach you how to replicate the exact same effect but you’ll be in control.
This means you’re in control of your pain every day, progressively working to eliminate it. Don’t worry, if you come to the clinic, we will teach you how to do the same thing at home.

We must repair what has been damaged

Often nerve pain or damage leaves areas very weak, uncoordinated and painful. This is a pattern that often, isn’t broken unless provided with the right plan. The right plan involves basic to advanced strengthening exercises to reverse the sensitivity and weakness.

Success rate of treatment for Shoulder Pain at Revitalize

We have an amazingly high success rate with nerve pain. This is because we don’t only treat your pain, we empower you to treat your own pain as well. Many other practitioners will have you coming back more than you need to, because they don’t give you the right advice and self management between sessions.
Basically, if you’re not doing effective exercises between your sessions, you’re with the wrong practitioner.
At Revitalize, it’s a must. One 45min appointment a week is never going to be as effective as a 45min appointment plus daily treatment and highly effective therapeutic exercise that you can self administrate every day
